I went 2018 from Finland to Sobibor, Camp and Museum. Looking Sobibor sign...nothing. At last i found little paper order: Closed, dont go. I have visit over 30 Camps, found huge respect. Sobibor isnt, I understant reasons to close but not that it isnt tell on web sites.
We were visiting a relative in Poland and spent a week in the nearby village of Okuninka. I had red a book by a camp survivor so I was acquainted with the camp. As an historian I had never visited a Nazi death camp and so we went to nearby Sobibor. We saw the remains of the unloading dock along the single rail track, then went into the museum which told the entire sad story in photos and descriptions. We then walked the grounds. The place has no remaining structures after the Nazis destroyed everything to hide their crimes. But there is a statue and a large round low memorial in a large clearing. The walk back is lined with the names of the victims on small rocks along the path side. The place is so beautiful with the forest and nature it is hard to believe what happened here actually happened. But now and again people find objects in the soil - such as a Micky Mouse pin that a child dropped. There is not much to actually see here besides the museum and the two memorials but the ghosts of the murdered can still be felt in these woods that say a true horror. I hope that this place is not close and forgotten. What happed here - and the other death camps - must to never be forgotten.
Creepy place
