On October 6, 1842, a group of Poznan citizens gathered to create a company whose aim would be to save life and property in the event of a fire and flood. The Volunteer Rescue Society in Poznań, whose statute was modeled on similar ventures from Wrocław and Koenigsberg, was concluded on October 9, headed by judge Kuetter, while the treasurer was a well-known Poznań builder, Antoni Krzyżanowski. On December 10, 1877, the first twelve professional firemen embraced the watchtower arranged by the city at Wolnica 1. Difficulties associated with the financing of the fire brigade caused that in the 1980s firefighters began to be burdened with new tasks. An important sphere of firefighting activity was flood defense, breaking ice on Warta, dumping there, pumping out water from flooded cellars, etc. In addition, firefighters had to collect market fees, keep the night guard at the city hall, and even - on bicycles - perform the duties of city messengers. More important was the fact that since 1895, firefighters had to learn the first aid elements, and from 1901 they served as a municipal ambulance. Initially, the main warning point about the fire was - as it was centuries ago - the town hall tower, where the watchdog service was still used. From 1877, a telegraph warning system was introduced, improved in 1884; from 1880, a telephone was also used.

Budynek straży wzniesiono w latach 1886-1887. Po jego zachodniej stronie znajduje się wieża, która służyła do symulacji akcji strażackich prowadzonych na wielokondygnacyjnych obiektach. Budynek w czasie okupacji rozbudowano od strony wschodniej. Jest to neogotycki budynek zbudowany częściowo na osi średniowiecznych obwarowań miejskich. W latach 2001-2003 dobudowano nowe obiekty w stylu dostosowanym do reszty zespołu. Obecnie całość tworzy założenie urbanistyczne, wraz z promenadą wzdłuż murów miejskich i zachowanych dwóch baszt.
